5 days / 4 nights
WED: At 08:00 a.m., you will be picked up at your hotel for a panoramic tour of Guatemala City, where you will see the National Palace, the Cathedral, and the Civic Center Complex. You will also visit residential areas to gain an understanding of the country’s rapid growth (shorts and swimsuits are not permitted). Continue to the Iximché Archaeological Site, dating back to the 15th century, where the first Spanish capital of Guatemala was established. The site’s architecture includes several pyramidal temples, palaces, and two Mesoamerican ball courts. Excavations revealed remnants of painted murals on some buildings and extensive evidence of human sacrifices. The ruins of Iximché were declared a National Monument of Guatemala in the 1960s. In the afternoon, transfer to Chichicastenango.
THU: Today is market day in Chichicastenango! Visit the most colorful and picturesque open-air indigenous market in the country. Hundreds of indigenous people from surrounding villages gather to trade goods and products. You will also witness captivating religious ceremonies held on the steps of and inside the 400-year-old Church of Santo Tomás (shorts and swimsuits are not permitted inside the church; PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOT ALLOWED INSIDE THE CHURCH). After departing Chichicastenango, visit the colorful Church of San Andrés Xecul. Continue on to Quetzaltenango.
FRI: In the morning, visit Zunil, the Almolonga Valley, and the Sololá Market. In the afternoon, transfer to Lake Atitlán.
SAT: At 09:00 a.m., board a boat to San Juan La Laguna, one of the twelve villages surrounding Lake Atitlán. In the afternoon, continue to Antigua.
SUN: In the morning, visit the most interesting sites of this beautiful colonial city, including churches, convents, monasteries, and other colonial landmarks. Afterwards, return to Guatemala City.
